Apollo Saturday School

Apollo Saturday School became one of the first activities of the new Apollo Club set up in the 1970s. This was in response to widespread community concerns around the miseducation of Black children. Parents wanted to make sure their children were afforded every opportunity to achieve educationally.

Saturday School has remained an integral part of the work of Apollo. The school is operated in term time, staffed by volunteers. We run from 12.00 - 2.00pm for 5 - 13 year olds. We focus on reading, writing and history. We aim to use materials that show Black people as positive role models. Children are encouraged to bring their homework also.

We try to create a learning environment that is fun but is work oriented.

There is much history with the school in that we have children now attending whose parents were once our students.  Clearly they recognize the value of education.

There is a small cost for Saturday School which assists with the purchase of materials and snacks.

Parents tell us they value the service we provide. They have seen the improvement in their children's' work and the development of their social skills.

We welcome volunteers as we aim to work in small groups to ensure the children have individual attention.
